From Lee Ann Ward, Founder of Writing Away Refuge...
Writing Away Refuge was born from the vision of Cicily Janus, the brainchild of the "Writing Away concept" that writers should be nourished in mind, body, career, and spirit through good advice, good food, valuable feedback, and solid industry connections. Writing is such a personal journey. Why does selling your book have to be so impersonal? It was Cicily's vision that pitching your work to editors and agents shouldn't be a 5-minute meeting in a hotel boardroom setting with little to no time to be seen or heard. So, she brought writers and industry professionals together in a retreat setting, sharing lodging, freshly prepared meals, and downtime together. It was a beautiful vision, and very effective. Cicily's retreats forged lifetime friendships for the writers and staff who attended, and I promised Cicily before her passing in 2016 from Acute Meloid Leukemia at the age of 39, that I would carry on her vision to the best of my ability, introducing more writers to the same experience. So, I took a leap of faith and Writing Away Refuge was born. Our debut live retreat was in October 2022 in a fabulous retreat house in Heber City, Utah. It was a wonderful, humbling retreat, and I think the attendees and staff were pleased. And it is a venture I wish to continue, to keep Cicily's legacy alive.
